Globelines Broadband subscribers are really pissed off. Many of them are threatening to jump ship and not at all threatened by the lock-in clause. If only class action lawsuits aren’t that foreign in this country, I’m pretty sure that Innove/Globelines would be facing one right now.
Rumor has it that Globelines will be making a statement by tomorrow and I’m one who’ll be anticipating what that news will be. Are they really placing a cap on P2P download volumes and throttling our speeds?
One issue that I am really curious about is Innove/Globeline’s business case for throttling bandwidth. What’s the point in sneaking this provision in the new subscriber’s service agreement. This just makes me rethink the basic ideas regarding business (and reminiscing my days as a management trainee reading Drucker).
TipidPC user rgscom6 focused on the possible impact this capping could cause to their numbers with quite the interesting number-crunching:

@globe
wake up call!!!!
@ 81 subscribers not satisfied with globe broadband services with an average of 1200php monthly bill. meaning a total of 97,200php monthly bill. tapos yung 81 unsatisfied subscribers humatak pa ng average na 10 globe subscribers each (kapitbahay, kaibigan, kumare, kumpare, kuya, ate, etc…) to switch to other ISP.
suma total:
81 plus 810(hatak) = 891 globe subscribers
therefore:
891 x 1200php/mo x 12mo/yr = 12,830,400 php/yearbaka mag times 1000 pa yan kung hindi nyo ayusin serbisyo nyo!!!!
therfore ulit: 12,830.400php X 1000 = 12,830,400,000php/year
friendly reminder lang po!!!
Perhaps this is a stretch as one’s personal network might not involved 10 other people using the same service especially since Globelines’ market share isn’t that huge compared to PLDT and Bayantel. Possible but really quite the stretch given the current data. I think what is important here is that subscribers aren’t happy and Globelines is staring at impending lost business.
So what’s the business case for this throttling? A way of saving on bandwidth costs since most of Internet traffic today (in general) is P2P traffic? Is this part of their advocacy to curb piracy and theft of intellectual property? (If it’s the latter, then isn’t the company typecasting their subscribers as a bunch of thieves?) Still, sustainability concerns and social responsibility aside, but as a business, it is important for Globelines to remember that they have customer needs to fulfill.
The reactions of 80+ current clients (the number who have voiced out their concerns via TipidPC) makes a joke out of Globeline’s mission, vision, and core values. This, if based on sound business concepts, spells a failure of Globelines as a business enterprise.
Based on this (growing) reaction, Globelines fails in their mission to enrich lives through communications. They are on track to fail at vision since they have made themselves dispensable to their current clients. The whole situation is also a failure for Globelines to exhibit their core values of “customer first,” accountability, excellence, and integrity.
But who knows what the reasons (and motivations) behind the throttled speeds. Maybe we’ve jumped the gun by assuming that this is a business issue and not just simply a technology issue (such as repair and maintenance). Still, the way Globelines reacted based on numerous reports regarding CSR and TSR interactions hint of an information blackout as far as subscribers are concerned. That’s unacceptable.
I do think that this should serve as a wake up call for Globelines to remind themselves that as a business, they have customer needs to satisfy. Whether the 80+ people will be a good enough representation of the demographics of their subscribers or not, this still echoes the point that people who subscribe to broadband Internet need P2P.
Now let’s see if Globelines really does put customers first.

Has anyone tried using Glasnost to verify the throttling of bittorrent traffic?
I tried using that to test. Negative results on shaping but the speed reflected on Glasnost is way below my subscribed speed (around 380kbps vs. 2 Mbps). And that 380 is the actual download speed I get when using P2P – 46-48 kb/s max – which is 20% of my subscribed speed. The same as the stipulated cap they have.
