Not even campaign period and it already sucks

Campaign period is looming with only a few months until the legislative and LGU position races begin, culminating in the grand circus called Election Day. It’s not even quite Valentine’s Day yet and you can feel the heat like some cheap-ass motel room filled by couples banging away like there’s no tomorrow.

I just can’t wait for the campaign period to start (so we could finally get it over with). Who’d get the snazzy media buzz? Who would spend the most on airtime again? Jeez. And those weak campaign jingles? Why not get Radioactive Sago Project to make you a cool one worthy of PA and loudspeakers from an owner-type jeep. (Well like Lourd de Veyra will do that. BTW cheesy plug: Launch of “TANGINAMO ANDAMING NAGUGUTOM SA MUNDO FASHIONISTA KA PA RIN” album on Feb. 16 at Saguijo Bar!)

It pays to be pogi nowadays. Hehe. Maybe if HD TV would be available, no ugly-fugly guy should even dare feature his mug on TV. Imagine showing the whole nation your clogged-up pores. Even porn stars are ashamed to be featured on HD.

I just figured, living in the Metro amongst middle-middle class to upper-middle class villages and subdivisions in Quezon City, election is a bit of a drab. While we do get heaps and heaps of campaign flyers, we don’t usually get the “election experience” of having stages set-up and having members of the Viva Hot Babes shake their booties about while chanting some candidate’s name.

For all my twenty-three years of existence (five as a voter) I have yet to be offered a price for my vote. While the rest of the country get a decent sum from X number of politicians. Not that I would accept such bribe (tantamount to giving away your rights = prostitution) in the first place.

I was engaged in conversation with a classmate who works as a spin doctor for one of those old-school (traditional politician) congressmen and I asked him, to what extent will they use new media like blogs and YouTube. Hey, it’s valid ad space. Any candidate want a stickied post with an embedded video for a million bucks on this site? E-mail me! (Am I kidding? Wait, that is a million bucks, right?)

A valid point he raised is – not for his boss. I agree. For one, congressmen are voted by a locale. And they’d still be better off focusing on a locality (and buying everyone’s votes) rather than spending their time on new media which could only reach about a maximum of 7 million online Filipinos. There’s no assurance that a good portion of a locale would be online anyway.

But new media can work for those who are running on the national level (senators). I mean that’s a good 7 million online Filipinos (okay, factor away non-voters), you’re still reaching the good upper C to A markets. And let’s face it, brainwashing the middle class is like beefing up your ballast for political longevity.

In any case, I somehow expect the blogosphere and Pinoy Web 2.0 will get cluttered with eletion and campaign scum. It will be ugly. It will be war. Not even election day and the wind isn’t blowing. It sucks.
