Synchronizing Pinoy time

It’s funny what kinds of laws our lawmakers are trying to spring on us. There was that flag change. Now, it’s making sure that Pinoy time is synchronized with HB 6905.

But hey, it’s not like we don’t have our own time zone (+8 GMT). We could just hope whatever this time is, it’d be synched with Coordinated Universal Time and not something decided on politician’s absurd whim.

Well, to be fair, there’s a bit of sense in this move. Valenzuela Rep. Magtanggol Gunigundo, claims that doing so will do a lot of good.

“With a set PST, we can welcome a new year in unison, blend time sensitive chemical mixtures like medicine and food ingredients and synchronize security locks and other devices. By synchronizing the official watches and clocks in the entire archipelago, all Filipinos can sing the national anthem at the same time.”

And like time ever really mattered to people in this country. One of the reasons I feel that our country is so backwards-ass is due to our irreverence to schedules. Pinoy time is attitude-driven, not clock-driven. Even with the planned “National Time Consciousness Week” planned to greet every new year, it would take a cultural overhaul to do.

That’s how we do business. Molasses, baby!

Breaking ads or classified news?

Inquirer Breaking News Classified Ads

When did they begin considering classified ads as breaking news? So this is of national importance?

Quick! A finance management position needs to be filled! The nation’s economy will collapse if this doesn’t get filled!

It would’ve been a lot more interesting if its an ad for an honest politician.

Parang abnormal

I have to say that I’ve been drawn to the paranormal, well, ever since I was a kid. This is something that is quite unusual given my usually left-brained nature. Believe me or not, but I used to see apparitions in our family home as a kid. That led me not to be one of those who’d say that “ghosts aren’t real.”

People who have claim to be psychic have always told me that my “third eye” is open. Well, it seemed that way since I was the only one who actually see that ghostly figure around our home before. It even came to a point where it was dangerous for me to drive at night and the wee hours of the morning since I used to stop for or avoid “people” who cross the street only to see vehicles zoom past them. I’m not really sure these days since I’ve stopped seeing apparitions for quite some time now. I think the last time I “saw” one was seeing our dad’s ghost standing at the foot of my bed one All-Soul’s day.

Today, with my left-brain in overdrive, I’m more likely to take the skeptic’s stand as far as paranormal phenomena are concerned. I remember taking that stand when a GMA 7 show interviewed me on my opinion for their Halloween special as their “paranormal expert.” Still, I’d like to keep an open mind. I still think that there’s some greater force out there. As for Santa Claus, well, parents spoiled that experience for us when we were kids.

Language killers

Not many “intellectuals” appreciate Internet memes. No one can deny though, the power of the viral to spread both information and culture among a great many. Many of us played bash the politician in the Pangandaman – De la Paz issue. While the case seems to have contracted rot in the courts, we can all take comfort in the fact that out soapboxing brought the issue to a national light.

In that we felt our importance in working in tandem with traditional media in being citizen journalists. We exercise our rights to free speech in search for truth and justice and our rapid-fire soapboxing was heard all over the world.

So what’s with this Right to Reply bill that already passed the Senate and about the pass the House? Kabataan party-list rep Mong Palatino warns that this sucky bill will cover not only blogs but other forms of electronic media as well.

The new office space

The workspace defines the worker and vice-versa. So if all you have to work in is a shitty space with shitty stuff, chances are, you’d do shitty work. So as one of the splurges I made for my new place is to make one room into my own personal office. And it’s got everything I need (well, save for my proper DSL connection).

Personal Office

I’ve got a relatively huge desk. I used to work on just half of that space in our old house. What I love most about this set-up is the boss chair. I’ve been having problems with my lower back after spending a lot of time on a crappy chair so I indulged in something way better. I threw in a couple of bean bags there for good measure. Figured that if Bryan would drop by one of these days so that we’d be able to work on our big-bucks plan, we’d be able to plan and brainstorm in comfort.

Another photo, after the cut.
