Cons and asses

Another sad chapter in the Philippines’ tattered history.

If you decided to live under a rock last night (or wasted the night away with those useless Facebook quizzes), Aye votes on the passage of HR 1109 (a resolution that would convene Congress into a constituent assembly to amend the 1987 Constitution) in the House of Representatives prevailed.

It was bloc versus bloc. By the end of the night, it was strength by numbers that prevailed. The opposing voices were reduced to muted subalternity.

The saddest thing about last night is that we lament the death of our supposed democracy but I remain with my belief that we never were a democracy in the first place.

Going by this blog’s intended purpose of analyzing social media discourse, I was appalled by the glaring disregard for political concerns by many young netizens, at least by those in my social network.

Internet buzz regarding the ConAss started around 6:45-ish last night and I learned about it via MLQ3 on Facebook. I was constantly updating my news feeds only to be bombarded by those insipid quizzes. So I turned Facebook off and switched to Twitter where more relevant non-trash discussions were prevalent.

Only a handful of my colleagues from UP posted their brief takes on the topic. As I reviewed the timeline, only a couple of students referred to the news in brief. Everyone else were just busy with other “concerns”.

And what’s with the media blackout. As far as I know only those from the middle class upwards had access to the updates of last night. Only ANC covered it. Since I don’t have cable, I relied on the Internet to get updates. A deliberate media blackout, perhaps?

I think protest actions are lined up for today as I’ve already received messages from people that there will be.

Will this be another EDSA?

We’ll find out soon.

Keep me updated. Nung nag-check ako kanina sa Twitter, wala daw tao sa EDSA Shrine.

OT, ang malas talaga ng adviser ko. Pupunta dapat siya dyan sa Pinas sa Sabado.

A call to pinoy blogs and bloggers to link blogs on HR 1109

We are issuing this call to all pinoy blogs and bloggers to link to other blogs discussing or posting on the issue of the House Of Representatives passing HR 1109 in congress. Link to these blogs even if your blog’s topic is not on anything related to HR 1109.

HR 1109 is one the most important actions of the current congress that will affect the whole country and our lives.

Let us link together to give pinoys the opportunity to be properly informed on the issue so that they can intelligently decide on their own or join a group to take action.
