Bracing myself for the December punch

December’s just around the corner and I’m bracing myself for the killer left hook that is the holiday season. For many, it’s a season of cheer and socialization. For me it’s just a capitalist construct that I can personally do away with. I got no family and I only got a few friends but personal courtesy has it that I should spend my hard earned dough for gifts.
Well, looking at my personal budget sheet over the past year, December isn’t really the most expensive month for me, it’s January since that’s when all the credit card charges (in my sister’s card) get reflected. However, since I don’t own a credit card and my sister’s far away, I’ll be paying everything in cash or at least via debit card (which, is good as cash).
I think I’m turning out to be the real Ebenezer Scrooge. Heck, our street’s awashed in the colors of Christmas lights. I elected not to put up any decorations for the fear of our electricity bill spiking up and our house going up in flames due to faulty electrical wiring. I’m not even putting up a Christmas tree. Though I’m thinking of buying me some decent pots and pans so that I can cook for myself a decent Noche Buena. Oh I bought a new and longer garden hose so that I can hose down our fireworks neighbors’ fireworks. But aside from that comfort, screw the festivities and screw the expenses.
Well, aside from the holiday season, December’s also my birth month. Being the kids who had been deprived of decent gifts and celebrations for his birthday, I have compensated for my past couple of birthdays. Splurging for a thing or two, treating my friends out. Not that I regret it, but they do a lot of damage to my finances.

For those few loyal people/friends who read this blog. Me being a whiner about personal finances isn’t exactly news. Having lost everything just a year ago, I’m really hell bent on earning a lot of cash for myself. Reality is, in this world, you’re really measured by what you make. Having reached a certain level of desperation, I think I’m entitled to do what it takes to prevent that from happening yet again.

Things that I’ll be buying myself this December (or even earlier on a whim):
- Nokia 6500 Classic
- Quad-core desktop PC to be used as a workhorse
And both things I’ll be using for work. Ugh. When will I ever buy myself something that I don’t really need but I’ll enjoy? I always sulk about the expense after.

Ugh. I need a new PC too. My Asus Eee just can’t cut it anymore.

I wouldn’t suggest a quad-core machine for anything other than heavy video encoding, virtualizing > 4 machines, or bragging rights. Just get a decent dual-core processor with enough RAM, and use the money you’ll save for a larger (or a second) monitor. At least the productivity benefits of the latter is noticeable.
