Round 2: Malu Fernandez versus the Pinoy blogosphere

In: Internet and Web| Politics and Society

22 Mar 2008

I avoided blogging about that anti-Pinoy OFW article Malu Fernandez wrote some time ago. The rest of the Pinoy blogosphere, however, raised hell over it. If I was in the mood, I probably have joined in the Malu-bashing. While, one friend of mine thinks that the whole issue was one of the typical (over)reaction for any anti-Filipino reaction or comment. Whether it’s a failure of the editorial process or just a tasteless comment from Malu Fernandez, the point is, I just hate blatant crass comments based on social class coming from someone like her.

This article is nearly a week old but Malu Fernandez just can’t keep her mouth shut (or her fingers curled back). Any Pinoy blogger would probably be interested reading on since it’s Malu again writing with a title “The problem with blogging….”

After spending a couple of years studying the discourse of the blogosphere, I can definitely tell that it’s a case of someone outside looking in. She definitely does not understand the dynamics of the blogosphere. Just check out this comment:

The difference between a journalist and a blogger is that journalists have to adhere to certain guidelines that govern the freedom of speech. And whatever a journalist chooses to write about—be it popular or unpopular—we do not hide behind an anonymous name and are resigned to the fact that we have to take as much as we dish out.

In last year’s iBlog 3, I really appreciated Alecks Pabico’s take on journalism and blogging as an issue where “sana wala na tayong away doon.” I have been a critic of this stance since lack of editorial influence is a characteristic of blogging in general.

But come, on. This coming from Malu Fernandez? To whom is Malu Fernandez referring when she writes “journalist?”

And God forbid…

Just a thought to ponder on… Maybe I should start an anonymous blog and really let go… but then again I don’t want to be responsible for World War Three and I would sleep much better being brutally honest in your face than hide behind an anonymous name. Wouldn’t it be hilarious if I started a blog just to shake things up and got a ton of money in advertising? If I do decide to do that I thank you all in advance for inspiring me… I’m always a glass half full kinda girl anyway…

I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor, dumb bastard die for his country. — George C. Scott as Gen. George S. Patton, Patton
