Ever wonder why a word’s meaning shifts from one thing to another. Blame it on consensus. Or blame it on a shifting weltanschauung. Hopeful simply means full of hope. But ever wonder why we oftentimes use it in the context of something hopeless. Like, “Hopefully, everything will be okay,” punctuated with a sigh.

It’s election day once again on Monday. And what exactly do we have in store for us then. The day after. And the day after that. Reading this bit from Inquirer.net this morning just made me a lot sadder about the state of our country.

Pardon me if I won’t choose to breakdown the whole elections brouhaha with my picks for the ballot and justify the who and the why. Right now, I’m just too disillusioned with the process to even think of who to vote. Same old names with the same old promises. Re-electionists always brag about their so-called accomplishments. But why haven’t I concretely felt the benefits of these.

I’m just twenty-three but reading all those materials in history and continually keeping track current affairs can make one realize that people have learned squat from them. We still have the same monsters that plague us. Everything just gets reincarnated in time.

But I’ll vote. It’s probably the last semblance of freedom in this country. Or is democracy, also a red herring?

Just to be safe, I’ll just never take too kindly of people who disappoint me and betray my trust. Everything just feels hopeless.
